One evening while winding down from work, I came across a new series on Netflix called “The Umbrella Academy.” Having absolutely no idea what is was, the preview lured me in. Ten hours of binge watching later…
You. Need. To. Watch. This. Show!
But maybe pace yourself, unlike I did… Unless you want to go to work on 2 hours of sleep. Not saying that was me… not saying it wasn’t, either. Ha!
The TV series is based on a Dark Horse comic of the same name, written by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Ba. Recognize the writer? Gerard Way was the lead singer of My Chemical Romance; a popular American rock band active throughout the 2000’s.
The Umbrella Academy centers around seven people born on the same day to mothers who hadn’t been pregnant when the day started. An eccentric billionaire bought them from their un-expectant mothers and raised them at The Umbrella Academy to be heroes. We begin learning about them after the billionaire dies and the adult ‘siblings’ return home for his funeral.
The first season is a fantastic ride and, while you could guess some things about the characters and plot from the clues the storytellers give, there are plenty of twists and turns to keep the viewer on the edge of their seats.
